bilateral hydronephrosis

bilateral hydronephrosis

Expansion of the renal pelvis and calyces of both kidneys, due to interference with the drainage of urine from kidneys to the ureters and bladder.

Aetiology
Acute and chronic bilateral obstruction, vesicoureteric reflux, neurogenic bladder, bladder outlet obstruction and obstructive uropathy due to uteropelvic junction obstruction, posterior ureteral valves and prune belly syndrome.

Diagnosis
Ultrasound for prenatal diagnosis of obstructive uropathy and prompt surgical correction may give good results; experimental surgery on the foetus in utero may relieve the obstruction or reduce the pressure on the kidney.
