Hochschild, Arlie Russell

(1940– ) sociologist; born in Boston, Mass. She earned graduate degrees at the University of California: Berkeley, where she later joined the faculty (1971). Her work on sex roles, retirement, and the psychology of work includes The Unexpected Community (1973, later revised), The Managed Heart (1983), and The Second Shift (coauthored, 1989).
