Iguassú Falls
(Iguacú Falls), a waterfall in South America, on the Iguassú River (in the stretch that forms the Argentina-Brazil border), 26 km from its confluence with the Parana River. It falls into a gorge from two sheer basaltic escarpments in 275 streams and torrents divided by rocky islets covered with luxuriant tropical vegetation. The total height of fall is 72 m, and the total width of both escarpments is up to 4 km. The average water discharge is approximately 1,200 m3/sec. The falls were discovered in 1892 under the name Santa Maria. In the vicinity of Iguassú Falls are the Argentine and Brazilian national parks of the same name. There is tourism.
