the central part of the long depression separating the Pre-Alps from the main body of the Alps in the French Alps between Grenoble and Grésy. It is occupied by the valley of the Isère River and is over 60 km long. Gré-sivaudan is one of the more settled regions of the French Alps. It is important for agriculture (wheat, commercial crops), fruit growing, and viticulture. There is electrometal-lurgical and electrochemical industry, based on hydroelectric power.
