Gruelle, (John) Johnny

(1880–1938) author, illustrator, cartoonist; born in Arcola, Ill. His family moved to Indianapolis, and he worked as a cartoonist for newspapers in Indianapolis and Cleveland before moving to New York City to work for the New York Herald (1913–21). He became famous for the Raggedy Ann and Andy series he began in 1918, and for Beloved Belindy (1926), among other books for young readers. In 1931 he settled in Miami Springs, Fla.
