Iambol District

an administrative-territorial unit in southeastern Bulgaria. Area, 4,200 sq km. Population, 207,000 (1975). The capital is the city of Iambol.

Industry dominates the economy of Iambol District, and heavy industry accounts for approximately three-fifths of industrial output. The chemical industry is represented by the D. Dimov Combine in Iambol, which produces synthetic fibers. Machine building, which is centered in the cities of Iambol, Elkhovo, and Tenevo, includes agricultural machine building, the production of subassemblies for hydraulic equipment, and the production of automotive parts for the Volga Automobile Works. Iambol District also has textile and food-processing industries. Lead-zinc ores are mined and enriched in the district.

Crops include wheat, barley, maize, sunflowers, tobacco, sugar beets, tomatoes, peppers, and grapes. About one-fifth of the cultivated land is irrigated. Livestock includes cattle (about 50,000 head), swine (120,000), and sheep (525,000). The chief transportation route in Iambol District is the Burgas-Iambol-Stara Zagora-Sofia railroad line.
