Ialomita

a judeţ (district) in southeastern Rumania, in the basin of the Ialomiţa River (a tributary of the Danube). Area, 6,200 sq km. Population (1977), 372,700. The capital of Ialomiţa is the city of Slobozia.

Ialomifa’s economy is based chiefly on agriculture. The judeţ, accounts for 5 percent of Rumania’s agricultural output and about 1 percent of the country’s industrial output (1975). It is third in the country in grain yield and first in sunflower yield. Market gardening, viticulture, and fruit growing are also of importance. The judeţ, has 163,000 head of cattle, 666,000 hogs, and 562,000 sheep.

Ialomiţa has food-processing, clothing, pulp and paper, chemical, and machine-building industries. There is a ferrous metallurgy combine in the city of Călăraşi.

a river in Rumania, a left tributary of the Danube. The Ialomiţa is 414 km long and drains an area of 8,900 sq km. It rises in the Southern Carpathians; its middle and lower courses lie in the Lower Danubian Plain. Its chief tributary is the Prahova River, a left tributary. High water occurs in spring, and in summer there are freshets caused by rain. The mean flow rate is approximately 40 cu m per sec. The river freezes over for 1.5 to 2.5 months in winter. The Ialomiţa is used for irrigation; a hydroelectric power plant is located on the river. The cities of Tîrgovişte and Slobozia are situated on the Ialomiţa.
