Acyls are formed from organic acids by replacing the hydroxyl group (OH) within the carboxyl group (COOH) with a halogen. For example, acetyl chloride (CH3COCl) is formed by replacing the hydroxyl group of acetic acid (CH3COOH) with a chlorine atom.
