chilacoyote borrowed from Mexican Spanish, borrowed from Nahuatl tzilacayohtli, chilacayohtli, from tzilac-, chilac-, element of uncertain origin + ayohtli "squash, calabash"; chili cojote, chili-cojote, alteration of chilacoyote (perhaps directly from an unrecorded form in 19th-century California Spanish)
