As the largest collection of ancient wooden structures in the world, 故宫 (Gùgōng) formed the imperial palaces of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.It is located at what was once the exact centre of the old city of Beijing, just tothe north of Tian'anmen Square. It is now a major tourist attraction, both for thearchitecture of its 800-plus wooden buildings, and for the many artistic and culturaltreasures which are housed within them. In 1987 it was declared a World Heritage Siteby UNESCO.
