Lord of the Rings, TheˌLord of the ˈRings, The (1954–55) a novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, which continues the story of The Hobbit. It was written as a story for children, but many adults also read it. It takes place in a land called Middle-Earth, and has many strange magical characters in it, including the wizard Gandalf and a hobbit called Frodo, who has to save the world from great evil. Peter Jackson, a film director from New Zealand, made three very successful and award-winning films based on the book: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. |
