Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Agave.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Agave, genus name ( Linnaeus Hortus Upsaliensis (1748) I. 87) < classical Latin Agāvē, name of the wife of Echion, king of Thebes, and mother of Pentheus < ancient Greek Ἀγαυή, use as name of feminine of ἀγαυός (adjective) illustrious, noble < the same base as ἄγασθαι to wonder, of unknown origin. Compare French agave (1769), Spanish agave (1795).
Any of numerous plants constituting the genus Agave (family Agavaceae), comprising perennial succulents native chiefly to the southern United States and Mexico, with a compact rosette of stiff, fibrous spine-tipped leaves and a tall flower spike; esp. any of the cultivated varieties of the American aloe, A. americana (also called century plant), which are commonly grown for ornament, and A. tequilana, whose fermented sap is used to produce the alcoholic spirit tequila.
