Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Cybele.
Etymology: < French Cybele (also Cibelle), the name of the goddess Cybele (classical Latin Cybelē, ancient Greek Κυβέλη; originally an Anatolian mother goddess); the specific use arises from the Descente de Cybelle ‘the descent of Cybele’ in the first act of Jean Baptiste Lully's opera Atys (1676) in which there is a chorus with orchestral accompaniment in praise of the goddess Cybele.The name of the goddess is also spelt Cebel and Cibel in English contexts in the 17th and 18th centuries.

1776 J. Hawkins Gen. Hist. Music IV. 392 We meet also among the compositions of the English masters of the violin who lived in the time of Charles II, with an air called the Cebell..it appears to have been an air in duple time of four bars or measures, only repeated in division at the will of the composer..the several strains are alternately in the grave and the acute series of notes in the musical scale.
