Etymology: < Carolus, Latinized form of Karl, Charles.
A gold piece struck in the reign of Charles I.; originally valued at 20s., but afterwards at 23s. The name has been given to various other coins bearing ‘Carolus’ as the name of the monarch; e.g. a Carolus dollar.
