Etymology: < the name of Demetrius Agaphi (d. 1795), Greek-born Russian naturalist who visited the regions of Persia (now Iran) where the turquoise is found + -ite suffix¹, after French agaphite (G. Fischer 1811, in Bull. de la Soc. Impériale des Naturalistes de Moscou 1 149). Compare German Agaphit (1814 or earlier).
