Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀγαπητός.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ἀγαπητός (usually Christian) man keeping a secret mistress, use as noun of masculine of ancient Greek ἀγαπητός beloved < ἀγαπᾶν to love (see agape n.) + -τός, suffix forming verbal adjectives. Compare Byzantine Greek ἀγαπητή secret mistress ( > post-classical Latin agapeta (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome)).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A lover of women, a philanderer.
