Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -algia; Greek -αλγία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin -algia (in e.g. cephalalgia cephalalgy n., nostalgia nostalgia n.), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek -αλγία (in e.g. κεϕαλαλγία cephalalgy n., καρδιαλγία cardialgia n.) < ἄλγος pain (of uncertain origin; perhaps related to ἀλέγειν to take care, mind, heed, although the connection is disputed) + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare French -algie (found in borrowings from Latin from the 14th cent., and in formations within French from the early 19th cent.).Borrowings from Latin and Greek are found from at least the early 17th cent. onwards (e.g. psychalgia n. at psycho- comb. form , somatalgia n., podalgia n.). Formations within English first occur in the early 19th cent. (e.g. ostalgia n., notalgia n.).
