† carline's pet n. Scottish Obsolete used as a term of abuse for a person in satirical poetry and flytings in 16th-cent. Scotland (see quots.).The meaning of pet is uncertain. Editors of Dunbar have usually taken carlingis pet (in quot. ?a1513) to mean either ‘old woman's fart’ (cf. pet n.¹, esp. quot. a1625) or ‘old woman's favourite’ (cf. pet n.² 2). Later quots. apparently allude to Dunbar's use.
