Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin carduus.
Etymology: < classical Latin carduus (in post-classical Latin also cardus (4th cent.)) thistle, cardoon, of unknown origin. Compare carduus benedictus n., cardue n.Perhaps compare also the following isolated attestation of the form cardus perhaps denoting an image or representation of a thistle or cardoon, although the sense and identity of the word in this passage are both uncertain:1716 London Gaz. No. 5481/4 (advt.) The Saddle Flaps with Silver Stars, and the Pannel with red Cardus near the Crupper. Compare Old Occitan cardo thistle or cardoon (13th cent.), Catalan card thistle (early 14th cent.), Spanish cardo thistle (mid 13th cent.), Portuguese cardo thistle (14th cent.), Italian cardo, the name of various spiky plants, instrument for carding wool (both late 13th cent.).
Now rare or disused.
A thistle or thistle-like plant; spec. the blessed (or holy) thistle, Centaurea benedicta (see carduus benedictus n.). Also: the leaves and flowering stalks of the blessed thistle, or a preparation of these, used as a restorative medicinal agent. Also as a modifier.
