Etymology: < cat- (in catapult n.) + -y suffix6.The South African forms in k- are influenced by Afrikaans kettie ( < English). Recorded earlier as a name for a horse:1874 R. St. J. Tyrwhitt Our Sketching Club vi. 114 A great, long, brown mare came up at a gallop... ‘Why, old Catty!’ Catty was short for Catapult; and this was ‘May's old one’, so called by all her friends.
