Phrases 1.In uses with the French definite article (compare quots. 1780 and 1825) originally with reference to the following passage (reporting on a visit to England), which cites the English word in a French context:1741 J. F. F. von Bielfeld Let. 25 Apr. in Lettres familières (1763) I. 359 Un Rhume, qu'on nomme Catchcold... L'on prend ici plus de précautions contre le Catchcold que dans les pays orientaux contre la peste. [A cold, which one calls a catchcold...People take as many precautions here against a catchcold as people do in oriental countries against the plague.]
Obsolete.
The condition of catching cold or of being infected by a cold. Frequently with French definite article (see note in etymology).
