Etymology: < canava- (in Canavalia n.) + -ine suffix⁵, with insertion of -n- after other words for plant-based chemicals ending in -nine (e.g. yohimbenine n., fabianine n.), thus contrasting with earlier canavalin n. and concanavalin n. (both denoting globulins originally isolated from Canavalia ensiformis).With the form canavanin compare -in suffix¹.

Biochemistry.

A toxic amino acid which occurs primarily in the seeds of some leguminous plants where it acts as a nitrogen source for the embryo and a defence against consumption by herbivores.Canavanine is (2S)-2-amino-4-{[(diaminomethylidene)amino]oxy}butanoic acid, (NH₂)C(NH₂)NOCH₂CH(NH₂)COOH. The naturally-occurring l-form can be mistakenly incorporated into proteins in place of l-arginine, forming non-functioning proteins. The consumption of l-canavanine has been linked to lupus-like symptoms.
