A yellow solid obtained by oxidizing thiocyanates with chlorine or bromine, formerly used as a mordant in dyeing.Systematic name: perthiocyanogen; C3HN3S3.In quot. 1884, Prochoroff is the name of the owner of the chemical factory in Moscow where the substance was manufactured; the patent application was by B. O. Miller (see etymology section). ΚΠ 1884 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 46 797 Prochoroff of Moscow found that perthiocyanogen may be employed as a colouring matter, and has patented the preparation of this compound under the name of 'canarin'. 1893 Athenæum 15 July 100/2 Canarine, obtained from potassium thiocyanate, is employed in dyeing cotton yellow from an alkaline bath, when it serves as a mordant for basic colours. 1935 Industr. & Engin. Chem. (Analyt. ed.) 7 94/1 Higher temperatures and a slight excess of thiocyanate favored the production of the nondyes at the expense of canarine.
