Etymology: < classical Latin afflāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of afflāre to breathe or blow on, to inspire < af- , variant of ad- (see af- prefix) + flāre to blow (see flatus n.).With the use as past participle (see quots. ?a1475, 1534) compare -ate suffix2.
