Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish canaigre, cañagre, cañagria.
Etymology: Apparently < Mexican Spanish canaigre (1895 or earlier), cañagre, cañaigre (both 1902 or earlier), variants of cañagria (1895 or earlier) < caña agria , lit. ‘sour reed’ < caña cane n.1 + agria , feminine of agrio sour (see agarita n.).
U.S.
A species of dock, Rumex hymenosepalus (family Polygonaceae), native to the south-western United States and northern Mexico, having clusters of pink flowers, long taproots high in tannin, and edible thick reddish stems and large fleshy leaves. Also: tannin or tanning material obtained from this plant.
