单词 canadoe
释义

canadoen.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: canary n.3
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably an alteration of canary n.3 (compare also earlier Canary sack n. at Canary n.1 2, Canary wine n.) after words in -ado -ado suffix, taken as being characteristic of Spanish loans.Perhaps compare Spanish canada (c1300) and regional (Galicia) canado (13th cent. in canados de vino , plural), which both denote measures for liquids and are ultimately derivative formations < classical Latin canna cane n.1 The text cited in quot. 1652 also has Canadoes as a name for the Canary Islands, although this appears to be unattested elsewhere.
Obsolete. rare.
Apparently: a type of wine. Also more fully Canadoe wine. N.E.D. (1887) defined the word as ‘(? Drink from a Can.)’
