Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French carcajou.
Etymology: < North American French carcajou wolverine (1703 in the passage translated in quot. 1703 at sense 1), catlike animal (in the passage translated in quot. 1760 at sense 2) < Western Montagnais (Pointe Bleue) kwa:hkwa:če:w wolverine, cognate with e.g. southern East Cree kuikuhaacheu quickhatch n. and Ojibwa gwiingwa'aage wolverine (see kinkajou n.). Compare earlier quickhatch n.The form carcajon apparently originated as a misreading or a typographical error (apparently earliest in quot. 1744 at sense 1). With the sense development compare also the discussion at kinkajou n.
