单词 canaanite
释义

Canaaniten.1adj.

Brit. /ˈkeɪnənʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈkeɪnəˌnaɪt/
Forms:

α. 1500s Canaanyte, 1500s Cananyte, 1500s–1700s Canaanit, 1500s–1700s Cananite, 1500s– Canaanite, 1600s 1800s– Kanaanite.

β. 1500s Chanaanit, 1500s Chananyte, 1500s– Chanaanite, 1500s– Chananite, 1600s Chananit, 1600s Chanannite.

Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proper name Canaan , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of Canaan (see Canaan n.) + -ite suffix1, probably immediately after German †Cananiter (1523 in Luther, or earlier; now Kanaaniter), translating Hebrew kĕnaʿănī. Compare post-classical Latin Cananitis, Chananitis, Chanaanitis (feminine) woman of Canaan (Vetus Latina, Vulgate). With sense A. 1a compare earlier Cananee n. and slightly later Cananaean n. 2a. With sense B. compare earlier Cananaean adj. In sense A. 2 originally after Hellenistic Greek Κανανίτης in the Textus Receptus of the New Testament (see Textus Receptus n. at textus n. 2), where modern biblical scholarship (as reflected in e.g. the Revised Version of 1881) reads Καναναῖος (compare post-classical Latin Cananaeus in the corresponding passages of the Vulgate; for both, see Cananaean n.); itself after Aramaic qan'ānā, emphatic form of qan’ān (adjective) full of enthusiasm, (noun) zealot (variants of which include qannā' ; compare Hellenistic Greek ζηλωτὴς zealot n., the epithet used by Luke). Alternative earlier interpretations of the epithet, e.g. ‘from Canaan’ or ‘from Cana in Galilee’ (the latter already in St Jerome, who may have been familiar with the use of Κανανίτης in this sense by the Hellenistic Greek geographer Strabo) are generally rejected by modern scholarship; the Aramaic word for ‘of or belonging to Canaan’ is kĕnaʿănī. See further M. Hengel The Zealots (1989) 69–70.
