Etymology: < Canaan (post-classical Latin Canaan, Chanaan (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), Greek Χαναάν, Hebrew Kĕnāʿan), the biblical name for the area of ancient Palestine west of the River Jordan, the Promised Land of the Israelites, who conquered and occupied it during the latter part of the 2nd millennium b.c.The origin of the place name is uncertain and disputed.
