Etymology: < Italian affettuoso affectuous adj. (from 14th cent. with specific reference to music). With the use as adverb compare Italian affettuosamente, adverb (1703 or earlier as a musical direction).

1. Music. Of a piece or style of music: performed with emotion or tenderness, usually at a fairly slow tempo; affecting, moving, tender; (as an indication of the tempo of a piece) fairly slow. Also used as a postmodifier to qualify other musical directions.When used as an indication of tempo, affettuoso usually falls between adagio adj. 1a and andante adj.In quot. 1790 in figurative context.
