Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aferir.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French aferir, afferir to appertain, to be appropriate, to be fitting (12th cent. in Old French; 13th cent. or earlier in impersonal construction) < a- a- prefix5 + ferir to strike (see interfere v.). Compare Old Occitan afferir . Compare slightly earlier effeir v., fere v.2, and earlier afferant n.
Chiefly Scottish. Now rare.
intransitive. To be proper, fitting, or appropriate. In later use frequently in as affeirs: as is appropriate; so as to suit. Frequently with to (also for). Cf. effeir v. 1.
