Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and probably partly modelled on Russian lexical items. Etymons: capitulation n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < capitulation n. + -ist suffix. In quot. 1896 at sense A. after French capitulard (1871; < capituler capitulate v. + -ard , derogatory suffix: see -ard suffix). In later communist uses probably after Russian kapituljant, noun (1917 or earlier; see capitulant n.), kapituljantskij, adjective (1923 or earlier).Frequently with reference to China; quot. 1932 at sense B. translates an unpublished letter (in Russian) from China, dating from 1927. Compare Chinese tóuxiáng zhǔyì capitulationism, literally ‘surrender doctrine’, probably after Russian kapituljantstvo (see capitulationism n.).
Chiefly derogatory.
