Etymology: < Middle French capitolat, French capitoulat office or function of capitoul (1567), district of Toulouse presided over by a capitoul (a1626) < Old Occitan capitolat district of Toulouse presided over by a capitoul (Occitan capitoulat , also in sense ‘office of a capitoul’) < capitol capitoul n. + -at -ate suffix1.With the form capitulate compare classical Latin capitulatus office or function of a capitoul (13th cent., apparently after Old Occitan).
