Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cardinal n., flower n.
Etymology: Partly (i, in α. forms) < the genitive of cardinal n. + flower n. Partly (ii, in β. forms) < cardinal n. + flower n. Apparently so called in allusion to the scarlet colour of some species of the plant, which resembles that of a cardinal's cassock; compare cardinal n. III. and cardinal adj. 7. Compare French cardinale (also cardinal), the name of various species of lobelia (1676).
