Origin: A borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx cammag.
Etymology: < Manx cammag crooked stick, stick used to play a game related to hurling, the game itself (19th cent. or earlier), cognate with or formed similarly to Irish camóg (Early Irish cammóc : see camogie n.). Compare earlier cammock n.2 1. Compare also caman n.Compare camogie n. and the Irish and Scottish Gaelic names for related games cited at that entry.
Manx English.
1. An outdoor game played on the Isle of Man, in which players of each side use sticks to drive the ball towards a goal at either end of the ground.Similar to shinty or hurling, cammag is distinguished by having few rules restricting physical contact between players, the relative size of teams, etc.The playing of cammag became increasingly rare during the 20th cent.
