Etymology: < scientific Latin Cardium (genus name) cockle ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 678; < post-classical Latin cardia heart: see cardia n.), so called from its heart-shaped shell + -al suffix1.
Archaeology.
Of or relating to a variety of early Neolithic impressed ware of the western Mediterranean, decorated with patterns made using the edge of a cockleshell, usually Cardium edule. Also: of or relating to the Neolithic peoples who used this method of pottery decoration.
