Etymology: < Middle French, French quart d'écu a coin worth a quarter of an écu (1566 or earlier) < quart quart n.2 + de de prep. + écu écu n.
Now historical and rare.
An English name for: the quart d'écu, a French silver coin worth a quarter of the écu, or 15 sous tournois.The coin was first issued in the late 16th cent., and remained in use until the 18th cent.
