单词 carafe
释义

carafen.

Brit. /kəˈrɑːf/, /kəˈraf/, U.S. /kəˈræf/
Forms: Also caraff, caraffe.
Etymology: < French carafe = Italian caraffa (Neapolitan carrafa a measure of liquids), Spanish garrafa , Portuguese garrafa , Sicilian carrabba . According to Littré identified by Mohl with Persian qarābah ‘a large flagon’ (see carboy n.1); but Dozy refers it to Arabic gharafa to draw or lift water: compare the derivatives ghuruf little cup, ghirāf a great and full measure of dry things, gharrāf having much water, ghirāfah a draught, etc., no one of which however exactly answers to the Romanic forms.
A glass water-bottle for the table, bedroom, etc. Also, one used at table, etc., for wine; attributive, designating an ordinary wine served in a carafe. The word has long been in common use in Scotland; in England it is of later appearance.‘Also vulgarly corrupted to craft, croft.’ ( N.E.D.)
