释义

adrowev.

Forms:

α. Old English adruchedon (plural past indicative), Old English adrugian, late Old English adrigiað (plural present indicative, transmission error), late Old English ædrugod (past participle), early Middle English adruȝie, early Middle English adruhie, early Middle English adruie, Middle English adrouȝe.

β. Old English adrupode (past tense, transmission error), Old English adruwian, early Middle English adrowode (past participle, nominative plural, perhaps transmission error), early Middle English adruwie.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: a- prefix1, English drūgian, drūwian.
Etymology: < a- prefix1 + Old English drūgian, drūwian to become dry (a derivative formation from the same base as dry adj.; see discussion at dry v.).In Old English a weak verb of Class II. In sense 2 perhaps ultimately reflecting association with the corresponding Class I weak verb adrȳgan (transitive) to make dry, to wipe away ( < a- prefix1 + dry v.). The β. forms, such as Old English (late West Saxon) adrūwian, reflect the vocalization of the voiced velar fricative, which becomes regular in Middle English.
