Etymology: < Spanish cañón pedrero (c1550) < cañón cannon n.1 + pedrero pedrero n., with loss of the medial syllable in the second element, perhaps by folk-etymological alteration after the Spanish male forename Pedro (see Peter n.). Compare earlier perrier n.1 2.
Now historical.
A cannon having a bore of 6 inches (approx. 15 cm) in diameter and typically capable of firing projectiles, chiefly stones, weighing 24.25 pounds (approx. 11 kg).The cannon pedro was one of the smaller cannons in inventories of 16th and 17th cent. cannonry: see cannon n.1 1b.
