Forms: Also Middle English calompniouse, 1500s calumpniouse.
Etymology: < Latin calumniōsus, < calumnia : see calumny n. and -ous suffix. But perhaps Caxton took it immediately from a 15th cent. French calompnieux, -euse (though Littré has it only from 16th cent.).
Characterized by calumny; of the nature of calumny or of a calumniator; slanderous, defamatory.
