Etymology: < cannab- (in cannabis n.) + -ine suffix5. The β. forms show suffix substitution (see -in suffix1).Compare the following earlier use of cannabine to denote a substance obtained from Datisca cannabina (an unrelated plant):1835 G. T. Burnett Outl. Bot. II. 562 A crystalline principle has been procured by its [sc. Datisca] analysis, which resembles Inuline, and has been called Cannabine or Datiscine; it has been used to dye yellow.
Chemistry. Now historical and rare.
A resin or resinous extract with psychoactive properties, obtained from the cannabis plant; = cannabis resin n. at cannabis n. Compounds 3.
