A colourless liquid with intoxicating effects, obtained by distillation from the cannabis plant.The identity of this substance is uncertain. Personne assigned it a formula of C36H40, though later researchers regarded it as an impure sesquiterpene. ΚΠ 1865 G. B. Wood & F. Bache Dispensatory U.S.A. (ed. 12) i. 381 For the former M. Personne proposes the name of cannabene. 1871 H. Watts Dict. Chem. VI. 391 Cannabene exerts a powerful intoxicating action, though in this respect it is less energetic than cannabin, the resin of Indian hemp. 1907 Proc. 28th Ann. Meeting N. Carolina Pharmaceut. Assoc. 104 Cannabis Indica... The drug also contains a volatile oil consisting chiefly of a sesquiterpene (cannabene), but the chief constituent is a resin of which cannabine is the active principle. 2005 M. Booth Cannabis (new ed.) ix. 118 A number of other substances were extracted and named—cannabene, cannabinnene, cannabin tannin, cannabindon, cannabinon, cannabin, cannabine—but no one was quite sure which if any of these was the substance they sought.
