Etymology: < classical Latin callithrix (plural callitriches), a kind of ape or monkey in Ethiopia (Pliny) < ancient Greek καλλίθριξ (oblique stem καλλιτριχ- ) having beautiful hair or fur < καλλι- , combining form of κάλλος beauty (see callisthenic adj.) + θρίξ hair (see tricho- comb. form¹), adopted as a genus name by J. C. P. Erxleben (1777) in his Systema Regni Animalis 55.The oblique stem of ancient Greek καλλίθριξ is καλλιτριχ-. This is the origin of the Latin plural form, and hence of the English forms in -ch-; compare also French callitriche (1749–99).

A genus of marmoset monkeys of the family Callitrichidae, found chiefly in Brazil. Also (in form callithrix): a monkey of this genus (also callithrix monkey). Cf. callitrichid n.
