1. Originally: light, systematic, rhythmic exercises designed to achieve physical fitness alongside grace of movement, esp. intended for women or girls. Now usually: physical exercises, typically requiring little or no gym apparatus, intended to improve strength, health, and fitness, and sometimes performed as part of a group led by a trainer or instructor. N.E.D. (1888) remarks: ‘Chiefly a term of young ladies' boarding-schools.’
