Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀδοξία.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀδοξία ill repute < ἄδοξος (see adox n.) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare post-classical Latin adoxia (1558 or earlier). Compare earlier adox n. and adoxal adj. Compare also earlier paradoxy n., orthodoxy n., etc.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Ill repute, ignominy; shame.
