Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἄδοξος.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin adoxus paradoxical, absurd (a1536 in Erasmus; earlier in sense ‘inglorious’ (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine)) or its etymon ancient Greek ἄδοξος inglorious, obscure, unexpected, improbable < ἀ- a- prefix6 + δόξα opinion, glory (see doxology n.). With the use as noun compare ancient Greek ἀδοξότατα (neuter plural) very improbable things. Compare earlier paradox n. and pseudodox n.
Obsolete. rare.
