Etymology: Probably partly (i) < post-classical Latin calligraphia (1572 or earlier), partly (ii) < Middle French, French calligraphie (1569), and partly (iii) < their ultimate etymon Hellenistic Greek καλλιγραϕία beautiful writing < καλλιγράϕος calligraph n.1 + -ία -y suffix3.
