Etymology: < scientific Latin Callicarpa, genus name ( Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 111) < ancient Greek καλλίκαρπος bearing fine fruit ( < καλλι- , combining form of κάλλος beauty (see callisthenic adj.) + καρπός fruit: see carpo- comb. form²) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix¹.

Any of numerous ornamental shrubs of the genus Callicarpa (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae), formerly Verbenaceae), which comprises the beautyberries; such shrubs collectively. Also (in form Callicarpa): the genus itself.
