释义 | Cape Malayn.adj. A. n. A member of a largely Afrikaans-speaking, Muslim community or ethnic group resident mainly in the Western Cape of South Africa. Cf. Malay n. 1b.The Cape Malay community is partly descended from people from Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Madagascar, who were enslaved or taken to the Cape as political prisoners, and who used the Malay language among themselves (cf. quot. 1822 in Etymology).During the apartheid era, Malay was established as an official subcategory of the larger Coloured (coloured adj. 3d) population group in a 1959 amendment to the Population Registration Act of 1950.Although still used as a self-designation, members of this community or group now often prefer the term Cape Muslim.
